The NOIM

The most important document in preparing for a wedding is know as the NOIM - Notice Of Intended Marriage.

To allow time enough for the verification of legalities, yet not waste time, the Australia Attorney General's office requires a window of opportunity to prepare the NOIM of no less than one month prior to the event and no more than eighteen months prior.

Although there is a very short list of reasons for 'shortening' the one month minimum, it can be a mad scramble and no guarantee that a shortening can be approved.  For all intents and purposes, don't do it.  Give yourselves the time to take care of the legal matters properly and in a relaxed manner.

You DO NOT need to fill this out as the 'official' version will be filled and/or verified as needed by your celebrant.  Yet, having a copy of it will help you more readily provide needed information.

Please keep in mind, in best practices, the official version of this will be prepared by your Celebrant a minimum of one month prior to the event for verification and validation purposes.  However, for everyone's peace of mind, the sooner, the better.

The DECLARATION OF NO LEGAL IMPEDIMENT TO MARRIAGE

Of no less importance than the NOIM, the Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage is necessary to proceed as it, too, is filed along with the NOIM.  All identification documentation, past (most recent) marriage/divorce/death documentation, and birth documentation as needed, must be sighted and verified prior to the ceremony.  It is best these documents are fully complete at or shortly after the first interview.  For additional information, your celebrant will help.

NOTE:  THE ABOVE DOCUMENTS WILL BE CREATED AS NEEDED BY YOUR CELEBRANT AND DO NOT NEED TO BE DONE BY YOU BEFOREHAND.

IT IS ONLY A RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU VIEW THESE DOCUMENTS IN ADVANCE TO AID WITH PROVIDING ANY NEEDED SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION.

THE ABOVE FORMS, THE NOTICE OF INTENDED MARRIAGE AND DECLARATION OF NO LEGAL IMPEDIMENT TO MARRIAGE, AND THEIR SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION MUST BE FILLED AND SIGHTED AT SPECIFIC TIMES BEFORE THE CEREMONY CAN BE LEGALLY PERFORMED.

IT IS BEST THESE DOCUMENTS AND THEIR SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION BE DEALT WITH AS SOON AS POSSIBLE -- USUALLY NO LATER THAN THE SECOND INTERVIEW.
